The Missing Part of The Lesson Take Care of The People You Love

Before we get into the post today I want to say thank you all so much for following along on my journey. I hope that by sharing my experiences I am able to help you in some way…that you can always take something from the things I share. After all, I’m doing this for me but ultimately for all the black girls and women who need to see/hear from someone who looks like them in regards to things they experience, are going through, or would love to do one day.

On to the post.

In Sunday’s post, Three Things I Learned From My Father, I mentioned learning to “take care of the people you love” from watching my father. However, with the knowledge and experience that I currently have I realized that when I learned that lesson it would have been beneficial to learn something else at this same time. Basically in learning to take care of the people you love it isn’t just cut and dry.

So what’s the missing part?

Boundaries. You must set boundaries, abide by them and make sure that your loved ones abide by them as well. Before you decide to take care of the people you love it is imperative that you know exactly what you can and cannot handle. Know not only when to say enough is enough but also when to say no. Taking care of the people you love is not mandatory in the sense that you always have to say yes. Sometimes you have to say no to keep from being an enabler. Sometimes you have to say no to keep yourself from burning out.

So make sure that you take care of yourself first because you cannot pour from an empty cup!
